👤To be able to use DSC, you have to connect it to an external gps. The radio is only compatible with the 1983 version of NEMA 0183, which is the only version that most marine electronics have switched to. It is a reptile.

👤Dislike, can't get the gps to work.

👤It's easy to program the Ssmi number and it's three year warranty.

👤It wasn't clear what my fault was. I thought the unit had a gps built in. This is important when you put your number in. I thought the digital system would work, but it won't. Hardwire directly to the battery. If the unit doesn't power up correctly, you will get a green light and no operation.

👤Don't buy this product. Initially, it worked after we plugged it in. It started working intermittently after about two months. We assumed it was a problem with the boat wiring. There is a short in the wiring, come to find out. You will not have this problem until after you return from a 30 day return.

👤I really like it for my boat.

👤The box was opened and shown what it was. I get a lot of parts delivered and they are usually in a bigger box. It's a great radio, small and light. There was plenty of power cable and hardware to reach the panel. It was easy to install.

👤The box had a cracked screen. I look through a foggy lense when I get in my boat.

👤My company bought two of these radios to replace older ones. We realized after installing the first one that the non-GPS version requires an externalGPS signal or else you will get an alarm every 10 minutes saying there is no updated position. Unless you hook up a gps receiver or other device with a data position, you can't disabling this feature. We don't need that since we don't operate more than a mile from the shore. Need the radio for voice communications.

3. Standard Horizon GX1800GW Station Explorer

Standard Horizon GX1800GW Station Explorer

Includes a belt clip, antenna, and printed materials. Waypoint navigation uses the compass screen to navigate. The Explorer Series radios will be discontinued. The second station RAM mic is compatible. IPX8 is aubmersible design. The menu system is easy to operate.

Brand: Standard Horizon

👤The radio is great. It was added to my boat. Go's signals come through my fiberglass top. The speaker is loud.

👤My previous radio was upgraded. Installation was easy after everything arrived as expected. Very happy.

👤It was easy to install.

👤It's hard to read display in sunlight.

👤The radio performs as it should.

4. Cobra MR HH350 FLT Handheld

Cobra MR HH350 FLT Handheld

The maximum coverage of the marine radio is 1, 3, or 6 watt and it allows operation of channels in the US, Canada, and internationally. Safety first, Scan channels to find conversations in progress and have instant access to Channel 16 for emergency situations. The Tri-Watch feature can be used to monitor three channels at once. If you drop your radio off at sea, it will be easy to retrieve it because of the floating design and orange core. The noise cancelling microphone blocks background noise for clearer conversations and the Burp feature vibrates the water out of the speaker grill to improve speaker performance. The Cobra Handheld Marine Radio comes with everything you need to use it, including a battery pack, antenna, owner's manual, belt clip, and wrist strap.

👤This is a decent radio. I bought this to wear on my PFD when kayaking and to stay in contact with my friends during river float trips. It has held up well so far. Make sure you clean off the salt spray after you use it. The battery life is good. I usually transmit on the lowest power setting. The indicator dropped two bars after two days of use. I didn't dunk it in the water to test the waterproof claims, but I'm sure it will be fine. Everything seems to be locked up. The unit can only be charged with the supplied charging cradle, which is my only complaint. It would be great if it had a C port to allow charging from a portable power bank during multi day outings. The radio is a great value. It's lightweight and compact and has a lot of features. The price-point is great for the weekend user. If I was relying on a handheld radio daily, I would probably spend the money on a higher end Icom or Standard Horizon because of their reputation for reliability and durability.

👤There is a lot of hate for this radio. It seems like sometimes people get lemon products, however with Amazon's return policy, that shouldn't be an issue. Like many other people, my radio works well. The sound is clear, it has a decent range, and it is water proof. Make sure you test it out, setup the warranty, and protect your radio if something happens. If you have a radio that is exposed to salt water, you should always wipe it down, even if you don't want to. Saltwater is harsh on things. If the radio gets submerged, you should blow into the mic to get any water out of it. I have only had this radio for a short time, but it is working great and I can't speak to its longevity. I mostly use it for inland rivers and protected bays in the mountainous PNW, and my range on High is very good considering the size of this radio. I was hesitant about buying this radio, but it seems like a good product, reliable and practical for me. I would recommend this radio to anyone.

👤It's designed to float, and has a function that will purge water from the speaker after it's been immersed. Over the course of a year, I've used this occasionally, but it's mostly about the weekends here and there. Rarely had to charge it. The "weather alert" function came in handy when I was out with my sons. I didn't have to test this feature because it's supposed to float. The speaker stopped working a week ago. Nothing bad happened to it. I stopped in the middle of the day. The speaker does not produce sound. When I was running in a regatta people stopped responding to me. Not sure about that. Will try and get my money back from Amazon, but I wish I'd bought it from a national chain boat store, because I know they'd refund my money for a new radio.

5. Standard Horizon HX890 Handheld Navy

Standard Horizon HX890 Handheld Navy

The HX890 comes with a Li-Ion battery, an alkaline battery tray, a 220V wall charger, a charging cradle, a PC cable, and a belt lip with lanyard. 6W transmit power output (selectable 6/ 2/ 1 W) floats 700mW Loud Audio and Noise Canceling Function for both TX/RX audio. Digital Selective calling is called DSC. Excellent ergonomics are provided by the Round Case Design. The built-in Integrated 66 channel WAAS gps receiver has a high capacity Li-ion battery and is easy to operate. Waypoint and Route navigation, Group Monitor Function, and DSC Group Position Call are all available in the display mode of choice. Water Activated Emergency "WHITE" Strobe Light, Two Scrambler Systems built-in, Versatile scanning operation, and NOAA Weather Channels with Weather Alert are some of the features included in the MOB feature. 👤I don't write reviews of products, but I feel I have to warn others of what to expect when buying a Standard Horizon one. The product developed a problem about a month after I received it, where the screen would light up but the buttons would not work, and nothing would show on the screen itself. I received a relatively fast response from the customer support email and was told that two distributors would be able to provide support. One of them told me that they couldn't help and that I should check the manual, which was not helpful since this was a hardware problem, and the other told me to stop responding. I contacted the customer support address again because of the lack of support. Several follow-up emails went unanswered after this was about a month ago. By this point, I was able to use the product less than the amount of time spent just asking or following up, or being ignored by customer support. I don't know if my problem will ever be solved. This is not good enough for a $200 product. I bought a Uniden HDS75 and it works great. I can buy another unit if I need it, and the two will cost less than the HX890, because I don't know how their product support will be. If you're reading this, my summary is: great product, but for such an expensive one, customer support is not up to scratch. Will not buy from you again.

👤I bought this radio in December of 2020. I kept it in a bag that was resistant to water. I realized today that I should make sure the radio is charged for the day on the water. A normal start up screen would power on the radio. The screen doesn't work. There are black blobs on the screen. There is a lot of water behind the screen. The rubber antenna separated from the internal antenna lead. This is supposed to be waterproof. It hasn't been handled or abused. It's been in a water resistant boat bag for 5 months in case it was needed for an emergency. Really disappointed. Will try to use their warranty next week.

👤When you transmit, it will transmit your coordinates. If you want to use this radio in an emergency, you need to register online with USBoat, and get a "MMSI #" that will identify this radio, you and your boat info for you, and if needed for using, this radio has all the features that are important. It may be worth its weight in gold if you need it. Cheap insurance at this price.

👤I joined the US Coast Guard auxiliary. A great radio.

👤Someone stole the radio that the boyfriend accidentally left on the boat. He loved the fact that I got him the exact same radio as him. It works 100% and is easy to use.

👤It has a lot of features that I thought I would use, but the audio is good and loud. You can change the channels and names if you download the software. The antenna is one thing I'm not sure of. The top 1/3 of it feels rubber. The radio doesn't seem to be that sensitive.

6. Standard Horizon HX210 6W Compact

Standard Horizon HX210 6W Compact

The case design is compact. The emergency strobe light is water activated. There is a full dot matrix display. Menu system is easy to operate. The warranty is for three years. The rating is 3.3 feet or 1 meter for 30 minutes. The band was built in the broadcast area. The US, International and Canadian channels. 6W / 2.5W. The power is 1 watt. Receive the radio bands 76MHz to108MHz. A high resolution dot matrix display. Function keys. Speaker mic Jack. The Li-Ion battery has a high capacity. 3 hour desktop rapid charge. The charging cradle and cables are included. The Li-Ion battery has a high capacity. 3 hour desktop rapid charge. The charging cradle and cables are included.

Brand: Standard Horizon

👤The range is not very far. My jet ski broke down in the middle of the lake and it didn't reach our marina, which was about 5 minutes away by water. Will work if you are close to someone you are trying to call. The battery lasts for a good while, but it dies almost instantly when it hits one bar.

👤Over the past year, it was barely used. The battery won't charge anymore. The radio was seated in the cradle numerous times and the charging cradle was reaching contacts. The battery was bad so the next solution was to replace it. On 4/23, a "contact us" form was sent and never responded to. I called on 5/7 and they sent me a service form at my expense. They wouldn't send a new battery, radio, or postage label. The customer service representative and supervisor didn't offer any solutions during the warranty period that wouldn't cost me money.

👤It's awkward if you are going to clip it on your life vest. I dropped it in the ocean and it floated, it's well made and waterproof, and it keeps it next to you.

👤For a hand held it works well. Well built. Sturdy and strong. The belt clip is very strong. The strobe comes on. I put it in the sink to see if it worked. 15 minutes later, when I retrieved it, the unit worked perfectly. The instruction manual is very good and you don't need a magnifying glass to read it. One can set many functions. I found it to be more difficult to set and use. It could be unfamiliar with using it. Some functions are battery lazada It's a hand with a small battery. The unit comes with 2 charging cables. The cigarette lighter' plug is a wall plug. Is it possible that there isn't a USB device? The unit needs to be charged in its cradle. The cradle and charging plugs are required to charge the unit. If the cradle is to be permanently mounted somewhere, but for a portable unit, what a pain.

👤A good quality marine radio. The charger is 110-240v and works on all frequencies.

👤I've used it for kayak fishing a number of times and it works as advertised. It's a good idea to lightly rinse it off. The range and battery life have been good so far.

👤The battery lasts forever. The small speaker is hard to make out for me due to my hearing loss. People with good hearing are not likely to have a problem.

👤There was no quality check before the item was shipped. If you look at the lower ratings, you can see that this VHS radio is common and most likely being under reported since not everyone rates their purchases. I was glad I didn't go on the water to see if it worked. I had to cancel part of my vacation because it didn't work. Already ordered another brand. The new company is hoping to be more reliable.

7. Standard Horizon GX1400GW White Eclipse

Standard Horizon GX1400GW White Eclipse

It is waterproof/submersible. A built-in 66 Channel WAAS gps receiver. Ultra Compact Class D Fixed Mount Radio is affordable. The class D DSC is called the ITU-R M493-13. Older Eclipse+ and Eclipse DSC models are replaced. The microphone has radio controls on it.

Brand: Standard Horizon

👤I like this radio. The gps part is the favorite part. I only needed to plug in my antenna and put two crimp on wire plugs to the power wires for the installation to be easy. The priority button is easy to use after using a different channel. I like channel buttons on the mic. As you scroll through the channels, the digital channel display is very easy to read. It seems like that wouldn't be hard. The last radio I owned was terrible for that. I haven't figured out the function yet but it's a handy feature that I've used on other radios. I don't have an external antenna for gps and it gives me lat long. I don't have fixed electronics on my boat, but it's a great feature for me. I listen to the radio all the time, even though I use phone apps. It's a good feeling for the rest of the family to call for help. I was able to get a number through my membership. The radio links our boat information and emergency contact info to me. If we hit the emergency mayday button, the radio will broadcast our boat info and lat long info automatically. It is very easy to install a layer of safety. I've only had one problem and that is the time. I can't find a way to set the time because it's tied into the gps. Utc or local time is the only time option I've found. The local time isn't my correct time. The time zone in Europe is called Utc. Great buy.

👤The radio has a gps device. There is no need to connect to an external gps. If you are a Boat US member you can register the radio for free. I am still learning all the features of the radio. The old mounting brackets will work on this radio because it was flush mounted in your dash.

👤I have many standard horizon radios. It is a good value.

👤Save money. It was a horrible radio. The switch doesn't function right. The start up routine is very tiring. Junk! I should have bought the ICOM radio.

👤Don't buy, work 7 months and stop.

👤Great item and fast service.

8. Standard Horizon GX1800GB Station Explorer

Standard Horizon GX1800GB Station Explorer

It's easy to operate the menu system. The Explorer Series radios will be discontinued. The second station RAM mic is compatible. IPX8 is aubmersible design. The menu system is easy to operate.

Brand: Standard Horizon

👤This is my third radio. I have the previous two and they both work. Every 15 years or so, I upgrade to newer features.

👤It works well. You can leave it on without an alarm going off.

👤It's easy to install. The wiring harness was plugged into.

👤It's easy to install. Excellent quality product.

👤My unit doesn't work and service tech tries to say it's not a promblem. Can't change channel, can't hear, and the screen has water in it. Not water proof. They will see if it has an issue and will repair it, if I send it to them at my cost. It was paid a lot for this. Don't want a repair unit.

👤Not good. The face of glass popped off. Speaker is not very clear. There is a lot of glare on the screen.

👤I upgraded from a radio that I bought in the 80s. It is a good value with the extra features. This radio is made of steel, which is a lot cheaper than my old radio. The radio will do things that were not possible in the past. I like the radio.

👤My boyfriend is in love with this gift. It works great with the features it has.

9. Uniden MHS335BT Floating Bluetooth Submersible

Uniden MHS335BT Floating Bluetooth Submersible

The new MHS335BT has Full 6 Watts of Power, Class D Industry Standard DSC, and integratedGPS. It floats, meets the toughest waterproof IPX8 standards, clears its speaker of water after dunking, and even has an integrated flashlight. There are weather channels from the National Weather Service. The MHS335BT is a great companion for dangerous seas. It is completely submersible and has the ability to handle the weather and waves, while remaining your fail-proof lifeline to information and communication that keeps you safe at sea. The IntegratedGPS Receiver is part of the Class D Industry Standard DSC. Set up the radio and text message with the app on your phone. When in water, the Water Activated MOB automatically activated the Distress feature. Includes a belt clip, antenna, and printed materials. Waypoint navigation uses the compass screen to navigate.

Brand: Uniden

👤"Up to 12 hours battery life" is the rating. When the battery was dead before my day was done, I was stunned. I decided to charge the device fully overnight and let it sit in my house without a connection to see how long it would last. The unit was dead after 8 hours. Had the unit been receiving or broadcasting any messages, this would have been a full day's sail on a battery charge. I gave it 5 stars on water resistance as it is still working, even though it has never been submerged in water.

👤The build quality and specifications of this radio are great. I tried a lot of high-spec VHF radios and was hoping that this would be a better alternative after some bad experiences with Standard Horizon 870 & Co. I couldn't charge the handheld because the metal contact on the battery fell off after 6 weeks of using the radio. I contacted the manufacturer. Once they came back in stock, they made me a new battery. Nothing has happened since 6 months ago. I asked for a new unit but no luck. That's my last Uniden radio.

👤The marine radio can't handle water. I bought this in 2019. I keep the antenna in my pocket while kayaking on the ocean. I washed it off with plain water. Have only used it half a dozen times. After I paid extra for the insurance through Amazon, the repair group returned with a new battery and it charged all of two times, but never took a charge again. I can not use the radio on the ocean. Not sure what it is for.

👤Shipping units with incorrect charges are currently available on AMAZON. I will not take my Kayak on the open water without this radio. It is durable and feature-rich. As of June 2021, Amazon is shipping units with an incorrect charge. You can't charge the battery with the supplies. The replacement unit had the same issue as the first one. The power supply and the charger base are different.

👤It didn't come with a back up battery, it came with a separate battery pack. Customer service from Uniden is useless. They are at home looking at the same thing as you can do online, but they can't figure it out. The best help I got was when I could send it in for repair, because they probably could find a new battery for it. The website says that they are sold out. The company is out of accessories and the phone. All of their phones were sold out. I brought this one down to Mexico for my boat. The other one only comes with a cigarette lighter that plugs into a cigarette lighter, not something on the boat. It's supposed to be plugged into your car cigarette lighter all night to charge it. I will not buy a Uniden product again.

👤I wanted this unit to be able to enter a way-point with a single touch, instead of having to enter entire Lat & Long. There is no compass ability for in-course navigation. I was able to use for emergency transmissions because I entered the code. Oh well. I use for a few hours during the day but the battery life-well I replenish after a few hours.

10. Standard Horizon GX1400B Black Eclipse

Standard Horizon GX1400B Black Eclipse

The USA, International and Canadian marine channels. Up to 10 favorite channels were recalled with the preset key. The weather channel selection is done by the National Weather Service. There are three types of scans: Programmable Scan, Priority Scan, and dual watch. Ultra Compact Class D Fixed Mount Radio is affordable. The class D DSC is called the ITU-R M493-13. Older Eclipse+ and Eclipse DSC models are replaced. The microphone has radio controls on it. It's easy to operate the menu system.

Brand: Standard Horizon

👤The gps in the unit must be attached with a proprietary cord. Without gps unit, it would sound every 10 minutes. There is no customer support. Not recommended. Spend more money and get icom called and email customer support.

👤I received this radio. There was a blow. It blows the fuses after it was replaced. Send it back and not hear anything. It has been 3 weeks.

👤The radio doesn't have a gps signal. Attempted to connect to the ais/cartplotter. I will make it work. I disapointed. buy one with gps The seller was not given any guidance. The aftersales service was not existing.

👤It requires a code from your local coast guard, which is labor intensive to get. If you don't get it, be prepared to silence the alarm every time you turn it on. It has a lot of features you will probably never use.

👤If you don't have a MMSI number, you will get an annoying beep. If you don't connect to a working gps, it will make a noise every 10 minutes. On a sailboat with a radio in the cabin and a gps located at the helm, you have to run a wire to connect to both. I would have bought a radio with the gps built in.

👤An enclosed invoice with an item price of $116.58 was the price charged by no review.

👤I assumed that it included the gps. I didn't know it needed to be connected to a separate device. Standard Horizon should create more explicit product names for gps and non-GPS models.

👤The standard breeches. It worked for a while. Maybe a little rain water made it waterproof? std hrizn says I have to pay to ship it to them. If they can, they will repair or replace with a waterproof king. I feel like I have been ripped off by this purchase and will never buy from them again.

👤Our boat has a marine radio.

11. Uniden UM385 Waterproof Emergency International

Uniden UM385 Waterproof Emergency International

Uniden's Marine Radios give you a heads up when a storm is about to start and will let you know if you need help. The UM385 has triple watch features, a range of international marine channels, and S. A. M. E Weather Alert. The UM385 rugged handheld mic allows you to transmit easily from the wheel while keeping your focus on the waters ahead. The radio is resistant to damage from rain or splashing water, which is what it is called waterproof. Distress Button, Position Send and Request are included in DSC. You can press one button to call for help. Full Class D capability. Clear communication is ensured by a high performance transceiver.

Brand: Uniden

👤I was hesitant to purchase this unit because of other reviews, but the price made it worth trying, and Amazon has an excellent return policy if it doesn't work. The spring action on the mike brackets was loosened due to reports of a weak plastic mike fitting. I saw no weakness with the mike and I think a fix must have been made. I requested a radio check on my boat after I installed the radio and antenna, and received a reply on ch 16. I requested a bridge opening several miles into my voyage and was told I was heard clear and loud. I received a lot of stations. I can live with the method that I don't like. I am happy with my choice.

👤It arrived quickly. It worked great the first time I used it. On the way back in from fishing, the wind got a little sporty for my 16' boat. I was soaked when I got back. When I turned it on the next weekend, it started to sound. All day it never received a call or weather information. It was not receiving. I tried to see if the radio would transmit or not, but it wouldn't. I had heard calls from the weather but not the Uniden. Now to get it shipped to them or send me a new unit. Get the extended warranty.

👤Four days of trying to connect and get working. Directions are impossible and will consume the rest of your life trying to figure them out. Think again if you are trying to connect a unit that only has two wires.

👤I put it in and we were talking in the harbor. I didn't think a tiny radio like this would do so well.

👤I had a radio for a couple weeks but it won't work in my boat. I bought a new antenna for the radio. I picked up another one and tried to use it, but the radio still won't transmit. I am pasted to the 30 day mark. I can't return it.

👤One out of three. The Uniden service is terrible. Send it in for repairs. Only one of the three I bought worked. They didn't want to issue a refund. I will have 2 extras after the first 2 are repaired. The first two didn't transmit. I thought I was doing something wrong. I was not. The product was bad.

👤It was easy to install, but the antenna that was listed came with a 3 party purchase that I would have to pay for if I bought the radio. I would consider myself a professional installer if nothing seems to work. There is a Nothing works on 9 or 16.

👤I bought two radios. They installed them and within a week the speaker died. I had to take the radio to a local technician to have it inspected and changed because I had no dealer nearby. I hope they don't give me more headaches.

👤It fit nicely into a compartment on my boat. A large display of selected channel has a great sound and range. It is highly recommended for any pleasure boat.
