👤I used a cellphone as my primary navigation tool and purchased the DriveSmart 65. The cellphone navigation systems are great, but I didn't like the convenience of the stand-alone units. I didn't like the fact that the navigation apps weren't easy to see when I manually used the phone for a phone call. There are two more Unless you use a different app or download offline maps from the internet, there's no navigation when you don't have cellular coverage. There are 3 more I never found the offline maps to work for me, there was always a problem with resolution that I could not resolve. Offline mode was not always used to work in general. I tried some of the other free offline navigation apps, but they seemed to be behind in updates, and did not seem refined, leaving me with a slight but ever present apprehension in my mind. I didn't like the small screen size when in portrait mode, even though I had an iPhone Plus. There are five The navigation app on my cellphone ran in the background and was not visible to view. I didn't see all of the trip info functions that the vehicle navigators offered. The app navigators had the same trip info, but it was hard to see. The DriveSmart 65 was more expensive than the 55, but the extras screen real estate was worth a few extra dollars for me. It is hardware. The screen is beautiful! Great resolution and bright colors. The brightness is turned up all the way. The 6.9 inch is the perfect size for me since I like to have all of the trip data functions showing on the screen at all times while allowing for ample space for the map/ navigation which is the most important part. The screen seems to be made of glass, but I am not sure if it is scratch resistant. The frame has a minimal amount of bezel which adds to visual appeal but makes accidental touches easy when trying to adjust the postition/angle of the unit on the mount. The screen is responsive to touch and there is little lag navigating through the menus, as it should be for a device at this price point. The speaker is loud and clear. I don't know what processor is in the unit, but I hope it is an upgrade from last year's model. It is smart to get the best hardware within your means, especially if you plan on keeping the device for several years, to ensure it will be able to effectively run the software updates. I don't like the way the power cord plugs into the back of the device. It would be great if it was plugged into the side or bottom, because it would be easier to mount the device on a desk if the power cord was not sticking out. The mount is standard and works well for mounting on a window, but I have seen it fall off of a vehicle. I bought a friction dash mount from Garmin because it seems to work well for now. I can't state my findings because I haven't had the battery disconnected from a power source for that long. It is very easy to use the software. It seems that the years of production have allowed time for most bugs to be worked out. The high detail map option provides a lot of detail and is helpful in keeping the user oriented from a geographical perspective. When you zoom out with the intent to use it indefinitely, the unit will automatically zoom you back in to the default setting, even though it does not really want you to have full reign on the map. You can have phone notifications for email/text/etc to show on the unit if you sync your phone to it. The option to make and receive phone calls when you sync the device to your phone is available for those that may need it. The unit has the ability to update maps without a computer. After attempting to update the maps 4 times, I got error code each time and the device aborted the process. Maybe it is because my internet connection is not high-speed. It will be great to see if there is a similar issue among other people. The maps will have to be updated with a PC. Conclusions: The device performs well as expected. Excellent native route planning and accurate navigation. The screen is bright and high resolution. It's right in the sweet spot. I am not convinced that the features this unit offers are practical enough to justify the higher price. If the processor is better than last year's model, this is a good value. It was a factual decision. I don't have to use my phone as my main navigation when I have a stand-alone navigator. Happy with the purchase, even though I mentioned some things. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a navigator.

👤Great unit. Primarily used for hiking and geocaching, it fills my needs. The batteries are on par with other units. The unit has a problem with the CHIRP function. Was this a deal breaker because the unit will power off on it's own within a minute of power on? I would have expected a better due diligence on the R&D department and some reasonable testing to find issues like this. I don't think I've ever seen a chirp cache in my area. I paid for this feature and I would like to see it work. The screen dim/timeout is the second issue. The unit should be visible during daylight hours and backlit at night. In order to see the screen, you need to have the back lighting on. Again, not a deal breaker, but when caching you really need to use the screen more if you are hiking. I don't know how this affects battery life, but I'm pretty sure it will. I would have liked to know more about the useage of this unit before caching. It's similar to a smart watch in that it works with a smart phone. It doesn't replace the phone while caching and doesn't function well as a stand alone unit. You need a fully chewed phone with a full range of features to take full advantage of the Geo capabilities. I recommend this unit if the headaches don't bother you. It has a great interface and doesn't want it to look like a kids toy. It's easy to update, it's easy to use and it's easy to upload maps.
👤The Oregon 700 was not as good as I had hoped. The battery life was not advertised. The screen was hard to see in the sun. It was difficult to navigate through the menus. The on/off button was not good and you have to hope you got it right. Press it hard and hold it for a few seconds until it makes a couple of small noises to turn it off. Couldn't get a satellite signal from inside my house, but I could see a message that asked if I wanted to continue. That was done with both gps and GLONASS on. You have to buy detailed maps separately if you want to download them for free. I'm talking about the Garmin in the past tense. I returned it. I'm going to try ONX Offroad on my phone.

👤I have been using the RV 760 for the last five years and bought this to replace it. The RV 890 is a big step forward. It's not just a bigger screen. The software has been greatly improved, the user interface is more intuitive, the touch screen is more responsive, and the voice recognition is better. The RV 760 had a smaller mount that would lose its grip in warm weather, but the windshield mount on this thing is a beast. The RV 890 has a bunch of new features, including the ability to use Foursquare, which is a big deal, not because I use it that much, but because their database contains many POIs that aren't in the Garmin database. The ability to plan, save and retrieve multiple routes in advance and the ability to modify the unit's suggested route are two of the best new features. It will take a while to try all the goodies. This upgrade was worthwhile.
👤I have a number of portable and built in gps units, as well as a phone, Ipad and laptop. The unit is easy to read and operate after a reasonable learning curve. I would knock it down form perfect for two reasons. The voice recognition doesn't always recognize my voice. The permanent base was used because the suction mount didn't work in my application. You can plan a trip with multiple stops and pick it up at any intermediate stop. The suggested rest stops are based on time and distance. It has lifetime maps, traffic, and the ability to program from your phone.

The magnetic interface works fine with the 20mm ball packed in the suction cup mount. The magnetic mount requires a 20mm ball and the dash mount requires a 25mm ball. A really bad shipment. It looked new, but it was a bad shipment. I'll try again.
👤I sent it back after I used it for the first time. RV Life is on a designated tablet. I thought the RV 890 would be more user friendly. The RV 890 is a mid-grade device. I spent hours on the device trying to download something. Routes with no luck. As I searched online, I found that other people are having the same problem. Purchase a nice tablet, download the RV Life app, and save money. You will get a better user interface, online and offline mapping and run your favorite music apps. This is not worth more than $500. 👤This device is used. I didn't know what to think when I ordered it, but once I got it, I was ready to use it. I plugged it into my computer and it said that it needed software updates and map updates that would take 3 hours to complete. I tried to run the updates multiple times but they would freeze up in about 20 minutes. I took a look at the device to make sure it was up to date. The home map of the device was not easy to change. I returned it because of the software/map update freezing. The seller,CTGINC, told me that they found it to be working well and that they would not charge me a restocking fee.

All my others show elevation, but not in a sub menu. My older nuvi 2555 did not have a weather radar. There aren't many buttons on the map screen. Everything but back and zoom requires two presses. Go to the menu first and then press un-mute. It's a pain when in traffic. Tell it to shut up or turn it on. The larger screen is nice.

Should have sent it back to Amazon. I liked the way the gps worked. I only recommend the product. The return was started because the seller wouldn't replace the wrong cable. I wouldn't dare not do my homework on an expensive item, I would read as many reviews and articles as possible. I do that on a hundred dollar item. It shouldn't take you as long as I did to make a decision on what you need or want, if you really know what you're doing. I'd read some articles comparing all the different features on a number of different gps units, especially when it comes to price. I'd ask the questions, "What do I really need and what am I willing to pay for?", if you're going to get more features with more money paid. Ok... I'm not going to go on a hike without taking a map and a compas. I know from experience that things can go wrong, and that you can get in a deep vally with a bunch of over growth and your signal runs out. I think this is the cat's meow. I'm not sure if I would use this more than my map and compass, partly because of all the things it does and partly because it's just that much fun. I'm not going to go over all of the features, but I would like to talk about some of the highlights for me. I don't think that's a deal breaker because I love the touch screen and I know it's more bulkey than the other units. It looks very bright. I downloaded the 7.5 minute maps of the west coast and they are clear enough for me. The 40 foot countour lines are the same as the topo maps I download on the website, I believe. If you get off course, the compass feature will show you by a break in the arrow line, which way you're off. Move over and get back on the line. You can also set a projected waypoint, which you can use to set a course back to it. I'm talking about having to cross a river and having to go out of your way to a bridge and then find your way back to the waypoint you set across the river before you detoured to the bridge. Base camp is a free software. You can set your map type preference, even the 7.5 minute. Then you set up your route. It's time to send it to your Montana 700i. Whatever unit you have. You can review the route you set up on Montana at the base camp. You can search for things on the unit. If you need to use a custom waypoint, you can just type your latitude and longitude over the waypoint one, and save it to your name. If you had that info, this would be great. I almost forgot about one of the most important features, which carried a lot of weight for me, deciding which unit to buy. There is an alert. It's true. They will come and rescue you if you lock into these special satalites. You need to subscribe to the serivce in order to use this feature, but I got the safety one at the cheapest price. It's somewhere around 15. A few weeks or a few months. You can get the more robust subscription, but it will cost more. You can send messages to anyone's email with this service. It could also help you without using the full blown SOS feature. They can reply back to you. It's nice that it's all on a satalite, so you don't need a modem to use it. It will work wherever your gps will work. I think that some of the user guide got a little hard to read, now and then, but for the most part it was very concise and readable. I know I probably didn't need the compass and altimiter features, but in order to get the SOS feature, you need to cough up the cash. Only a few of the higher end units have it. I'm very happy with the gps. I hope I mentioned that it is the Montana 700i. I didn't want to give away the extra "beans" for the 750 model, which has the camera as well. 👤A lot of the negative reviewers didn't understand what they were buying when they ordered this. This isn't a replacement for your maps and it isn't intended to be. Some of the negatives are positive features. It was large. It's large, but it will take a lot more beating than a small smart phone. The shape makes it easier to hold in the hand. 2. There is no touchscreen. Have you ever tried to use your phone in the rain? Touchscreens are great in warm climates. It is designed for use in dirty environments. 3. The user interface is outdated. This sort of phone is similar to a 2008 cell phone. The layout is easy to set up and contributes to the battery life. 4. AA batteries. The eTrex doesn't have a rechargeable battery like every other electronic device. It's difficult to understand why they think this would be a good idea. If you're out on a long hike/camping/hunting trip for several days, it's unlikely that you'll have access to a charging port, which makes it easier to just pop in two new batteries when the old ones run out. 5. There is a memory capacity. The maps take up the entire integrated memory. You can buy a 32gb card for $6 and download as many maps as you want. There are lots of videos on how to do this. 6. There is no map detail. I haven't encountered any flaws with the maps, so unless you're trekking through Gates of the Arctic, you'll probably be covered on any state or local trails. 7. Inaccuracy of location. The registered location is close to where I'm actually standing. My cell phone is usually off by 50 to 100 feet. It's not the point of exactitude, it's to help you find your way back to your camp, etc. Being off by a few yards isn't a big deal if you're within sightline. There are 8. There are noroutable maps. It operates differently than your phone's map app. You type in the address and it takes you there. It's not clear why people think it won't. There are 9. The features and interface are confusing. I can't believe this one. There are lots of videos and articles on how to use features. I download AllTrails Pro trails into Basecamp and then export them onto the eTrex when I'm ready to go. I follow the trail on the device. There are two more When I go on a non-prepared trip, I use the eTrex to record my track and save it on the device, then I plug it into my computer and send it to Basecamp. Done. If you're outdoors a lot, you're willing to dedicate minimal time to understanding how to use it, and you understand that this sub-$200 gps that will last you for a decade is not intended to replace your $800+ cellphone.
👤The company is abysmal. The product they have created is straight out of the era of the Blackberry. They offer nothing in the handheld market that is close to a modern device. This piece of hardware and software is not good. I will return it. I didn't return the inferior Garmin that I have in my car, and it burns me up. Never again! The screen is tiny, and I have encountered other issues in my brief period of ownership. I need to hike in the desert. The screen is useless. My phone works in the same way with no glasses. - The best tech minds don't work for Garmin. - The screen gets bumped in your pocket and you lose battery life. You can't search for a location by state, it returns zero results. The method to change the order of items in the Main menu is different from the Route Planning menu. - The deleted tracks menu contains all the settings. What? There are no maps. The data is solid, so I give this 2 stars instead of 1 Since my return of this device, I have been using a solution. I wanted a dedicated device just for mapping, I hike extensively off trail. I bought a burner phone at a box store and it works without being activated. I disabled all the apps that I could. I bought and downloaded Gaia for mapping and route finding. You can download maps before you leave. You can get phone service if you don't have to download maps, but it will cost more. I made the device bulletproof by adding a protective case with a backpack clip and an external battery pack. The setup has been great. Gaia is awesome. There are maps on the screen. The hardware and software are easy to use. The accuracy is very good. I have access to a lot of maps. Finally, it's a cheaper option. It's shocking that the company that does this can't do it.

👤I have been on a frustrating activity tracker and smart watch journey. I was looking for something that didn't seem right. I like to hunt, hike, bike, and occasionally run. An accurate altimeter, barometer, andGPS are things that are very important to me. The first thing I bought was the Fenix 3 HR. I thought I had found the one that was impressive in the beginning. The issue was the altimeter. It wasn't accurate. I waited for the Fenix 5. Same issue. It was worse than the 3. I was told to put the watch in warm soapy water. I continued to experience the same issue even after this seemed to reset it back to normal. I decided not to put my watch in a warm glass of soapy water every night. The 5 plus appeared to solve the issues. But then, garmin made a change to the Instinct. This watch has caught my eye so far. It is light and comfortable. The Fenix watches are large and heavy to wear. You forget you are wearing a watch. The features are great. It has everything I need. I don't care about some of the measurements the Fenix gives you. Some people have commented on the display. I don't agree. It would be similar to E Ink from a book. It is a pleasure to look at and readable. It is black and white. The keys are easy to use. The menus are very fast. You can use the settings to get where you want. The buttons are very good and I have not accidentally pressed one while bending my wrist. The accuracy of the ABC sensors is still being tested but so far it is looking great. I can not say enough about this watch. It seems like a great model from Garmin that will fit in with the niche hunting/outdoors market. I will give an update in a month. I have had this watch for a few weeks and have taken it on several hunting trips. I am very impressed with this watch. This watch is light and comfortable. I think I forgot how nice it is to wear a watch that you forget is attached to your wrist, because I have been wearing heavier watches over the years. I didn't like wearing my watches to bed. I would get into my wrist because it was too bulky. Tracking seems to be accurate. When you are tracking an activity, the attitude has been accurate. What I like about this watch is it is comfortable. It is lightweight and responsive. Menus and screen. The buttons arecessed to avoid Accidental Presses. I only have a few complaints and suggestions to improve the watch. When you lock the keys, you can hold any button for a short time in order tounlock the watch. The amount of time it takes to hold the button is too long. It takes about half a second for it to be unlocked currently. This is a small complaint. The screen is a proprietary material. I would like it to be a display made of sapphires. You can't tell if there is a screen protector on the face because I put one on it. The battery indicator should show a percentage as opposed to the 5 bars in a battery indicator. It would be nice if they changed that. Please ask me questions. I would be happy to answer. Over the years, I've done a lot of research on these watches and believe I have finally found the perfect watch for my needs. I've used all of the watches. This is my favorite watch. An absolutely great watch is still available. Every single day, this watch is on my wrist. It is still very comfortable. I have had a couple issues that I will address. It is a button on the watch. The watch was still under warranty. The watch was replaced quickly. They received an A+ for their customer service. I would be SOL if it had gone out after the warranty period. I think it is a one year warranty. I use this watch a lot. It is always worn. It has held up very well. I still think it is an amazing watch for the price. The lock feature on the watch is one of the issues I stated in the review. You can lock the screen. It is very easy to get it unlocked by bending your wrist and hitting a button. This could be a simple fix. The amount of time required to press a button is not a problem. It doesn't happen very often. It can be very frustrating if it does during an activity. This will be my last update. I will buy another watch whenever this one dies because it has been an amazing watch for me. I hope the watch continues to be improved. All the boxes are checked for my needs.

👤I upgraded to this unit from the other one. The 595LM is superior to the . The screen is the most important. The 595LM screen is sharper than the 665 screen. I can easily read the screen on the 595LM at highway speeds through a dark motorcycle helmet face shield. The 595LM is a joy to use. The 665 screen has trouble with visibility in bright sunshine. The screen layout is really nice. It tells you what the cross-street is when you approach an intersection. This may sound banal, but in practice it is very useful, as here in California street signs are often either absent or poorly placed. This is the most useful feature on the screen. There is a streaming music function. The 595 shines here. I can use my phone to interface with the Zumo. This allows me to control my phone from the Zumo screen, and also control my phone from the screen. The 665 wouldn't do this reliably. The 595 will and does. Many users tried to get this to work, but it was not possible. The Zumo gives the rider the option to listen to music from the likes of iTunes, or listen to mp3s on the Zumo itself. The control center for the rider's electronics is located at the Zumo. If you open the app on your phone while riding, it will show you traffic and weather data. This feature is very nice. The screen of the 595LM is larger than that of the 665. The unit seems to have a better fit and finish than the , and they have a port that is easy to access, unlike the where it was completely inaccessible while the unit was in use. You can set the 595LM to ask if you want to reset the gas setting tank. This makes it easy to do that. The implementation is very good. I have had no issues with my headset. As I continue to use the Zumo 595LM, I will update this review. Five stars for now. Rbb.
👤I own a number of cars, including a Garmin Zumo 660/BMW Navigator IV and a Garmin Nuvi, and have used them to travel around the globe. I am an experienced user of the gps and can confirm that there are a lot of bugs that need to be fixed. Its current performance is not good enough to be usable for long distance motorcycle or automobile navigation. It should work at the very least for navigation purposes when the cost is between $800 and $900. It doesn't. I used the Zumo 595LM for the trip pictured below. The gps did not work. I tried to fix the problems on this trip, but nothing worked. I had many terrible problems with the new SD Card I purchased at the suggestion of the Customer Service Tech. The gps is not ready for use. I returned the gps to the seller so that I could buy it again if I had a bad unit. The price to re-purchase has gone up so I decided not to purchase another one and will use my functional 550 or 660. There are problems with the navigation device. "Couldn't calculate the route" error. The biggest problem with the gps is that it always throws a "Cannot Calculate The Route" error. The error would appear randomly and most often when you needed the route. The only thing a gps has to do correctly is calculate a route, and this one doesn't do that. At least three times a day, I would look at the gps and see a large screen error saying "Couldn't calculate the route". I tried to clear the error and look at the map, but the screen was frozen and no inputs could be made. The power button had to be held down for 12 seconds and the gps had to be reset. The gps does not locate the satellites after the first reboot. The second try causes it to return to normal operation and not the route you were following. To get back to the route you were following, you have to press the power button a single time off, then again back on, and then it would locate satellites and give you the option to re-start the route. You miss many turns when you are on a motorcycle at a time when you need to know directions or for an impending direction change. I missed turns at least 10 times on the trip. This is a terrible problem. After having this happen at least 10 times, I called customer service from the side of the road. The first customer service tech suggested that I turn off my trip tracking or breadcrumb function because the gps uses the same memory for route/trip tracking and calculating that it does for keeping trip tracks. This was a huge problem for me because I like to keep my tracks and download them. Within two hours, the same error occurred again after I reluctantly turned it off. The solution did not work for me. I called customer service again. I was told on the second call that some of the SD cards don't work well with the 595. I used a PNY class 10 card. I was told to remove the card and reformat it, then try it again. I backed up my data and then formatted it and tried it again. Within an hour, the gps showed a "Cannot Calculate Route" error and froze up again, while trying to navigate San Francisco traffic to the Golden Gate. After buying a new card, I formatted the disk and then reloaded my data again. The "Cannot Calculate Route" error came up when I wasn't on a trip or a route. The screen quality is 2. The motorcycle gps needs to be bright and clear. The screen is not bright and the fonts are small. It is hard to see and read in the sun. The reflection wipes out the display of brightly colored clothing such as a motorcycle safety vest. There is a display problem in motorcycling because of the bright clothing and Sunlight. Audio 3. The gps could not find the mp3s on the card. I had to hold the power button down for 12 seconds in order to make it work. I had to enter the media player, switch sources to something else, and then save again, and then the gps would not play the mp3's, but I could see them. The play button wouldn't work, but it would show them on the screen. The next step was to change source again, save, change back to mp3 and then save again. The mp3's play would only happen after that. I had to go through all of the steps again after the gps lost power when I stopped for gas. 4. There was a problem with the audio connection on three different audio devices. The audio quality is mono and not stereo and it is very fuzzy. The audio quality would switch to stereo when I checked the box again after disabling the headphones. Each time the gps powered down, this procedure would have to be followed.

👤I got a gps device to coordinate my hike. It has been barely functional and disappointing. It's rugged, lightweight and useful for locating myself on paper maps. The battery life is poor, it takes 5 to 30 minutes to type one text message, and it does not send tracking points or receive messages nearly as reliably as I expected. The battery life is short and the settings seem to not extend it. It would be easy to turn the device off occasionally. When the device is turned on, received messages are returned to sender, instead of being delivered. If the device is on, family can reach you. It's hard to send a tracking point when the device is not on and it takes a bit of time. If you turn the device off, the "share map" message feature will not work. The speed and distance estimates are useless with 10 minute tracking. I expected better, but it works for $250. Satellite data connection and rugged case for your phone will be cheaper upfront, easier to use, and probably just as reliable.
👤It is a great tool for safety conscious people. It worked well for me when I was out of service range for a portion of my motorcycle trip. The accuracy is amazing. preset messages would be sent to my contacts to let them know where I am. I looked at the gps link this unit sent. It was not more than a few feet away from where I was standing. The unit is light. Once you spend a few minutes with it, it's easy to use and the battery lasts a couple days.

There is a Every message I have sent out has been received. It works as advertised and I can message my wife every few hours. She can see where I am. Cheap investment for safety.

👤This is a very nice product that is durable and high-quality. Everything here is from my original review, and I stand by it. I've already figured out a lot of the things in the user manual. It's a very good device, and I highly recommend it. I would buy it again. I'm keeping this review at 4 stars for the reasons noted. The quality of the user manual is high and it does a lot of different things. It takes a lot of words and images to explain it all, and that takes a lot of time to read and figure it out, and I think many of these things could be simplified and/or consolidated in logical ways. There is a steep learning curve to figuring out how to use it. The user interface is similar to a product designed in Europe. Things that should be basic are executed in multiple, convoluted steps with abstract symbols. I've given the 550 access to my Contacts and created a few "My Places." When I try to create a route using the basic address/POI search field starting point and destination, it doesn't cross reference the entries in My Places or Contacts. If you want to use Contact or My Place as a starting point, you have to go to the separate My Places or Contacts data sets. It's fine to have separate data locations, but it's simpler to have the search look at the data sets to find the route locations. This is just one example of taking a simple, logical concept and turning it into an unnecessary, multi-step process. I think it's Dutch, but I have no idea why I'd ever see options in another language. It may be German. English is the only language I have designated, and the only map I have installed is US/Canada. The "edit" function in My Places is greyed out when I try to remove weird Dutch or German places. The two German destinations that I created don't show up on my list when I go to the My Places data. One of the sources of data for My Places is My Places itself and the other is a different list of My Places that pop up when you are creating a route. There are more quirks to the interface. I'll figure it out eventually, but the designers need a lesson in KISS.
👤I wanted it to work. The screen is bright and it looks great. It had a glaring issue. I made contact with the display, but the screen wouldn't respond to my finger before I did. As soon as anything gets within a certain distance of the display, it responds as if I actually made contact. It is not usable and frustrating. I don't have a lot of experience with this device, so I didn't find the menu very intuitive. The real issue is the display malfunction. The screen sensitivity was set to the least sensitive setting. It didn't make a difference. The price is awesome, but the device is not. I immediately returned it.

👤I don't know how many gpss I have used on a motorcycle. I think it's around 10. The motorcycle specific Gps are the first I have tried and they are too small for my liking. I have had it for about a year. My actual use has been limited because of the lack of appeal to ride in our Florida heat and humidity. There are a few observations about the screen. Even in direct sunlight, it is bright and readable. It's better than any of the previous ones I've used. Big plus! The data fields are easy to read, and the speed indicator glows red when you are speeding. The screen on the gps is glove friendly. Maybe this year I will be able to escape from Florida. The screen is a perfect size. The last 3 gpss I used were massive trucks. Big, easy to read, and extremely competent, but bulky. The larger, dimmer screen on the others is not as bright as the brighter screen on this, and the smaller overall size fits into the dash area better. Another plus. The Zumo is impervious to rain. The automotive/truckGPSs I have been using were not up to date. It's nice to no longer worry about the gps getting wet. The standard 1” ball mount was used for the gps. There is no need for special cradles or adapters. I decided to use the previously installed Ram ball and a 6” arm I already had in a big box of extra Ram stuff instead of using the bar mount and arm. The included dock/mount seems to hold the gps in place. You can remove the gps in a split second if you push a button on the back. The cable stays with the mount. The rubber cover for the contacts is included when the gps is not installed. Installation is very fast. Simply clip it back on. It's great if you have a place to securely store the gps. Some people may think that a thief can push the same button and walk away with your gps. The wiring was easy to follow. You need a negative and positive wire. I don't have to worry about messing with the gps because my car is wired to a hot-all-the-time circuit. The map retains detail when you zoom in, which is something I believe will make this gps more useful than any of the newer gpss I have used. I don't follow a pre-determined route on the bike. On the bike, I usually wing it, with only a general idea of where I'm headed, using the gps more as an electronic road atlas than just blindly following a route. You can still see the secondary roads with the map detail turned all the way up. Secondary roads are usually disabled above.3 or.500 miles. If you want to know where that little road you are thinking of exploring goes to, you might be able to see by zooming out, instead of having to scroll around and lose perspective. I prefer to adjust the zoom level myself when underway. The auto zoom seems to work at a useful level so far. I will try it. Time will tell... I just set it manually because I got tired of it zooming in and out on it's own. For the first year that I had this gps, I had a problem with how it handled points of interest. For the uninitiated and non-geeks, custom points of interest are lists of locations that may be of interest to you that would not normally be included with a gps's factory installed POIs. They can be a collection of stores or a collection of stores. The lists can be downloaded from a website, or you can make your own if you want to. The custom POIs were only accessible by digging into the menu system on the Zumo XT. A top level search didn't include custom POIs. I could live with that, but the worst thing for me was that there was no way to make the custom POI icons on the map. It's always nice to look at the map and see if one is close to something. The unit started showing custom POIs after the system update. "Up ahead" in the map settings menu must be checked to show your POIs. This will show the system icons for fuel, restaurants, and motorcycle related POIs, and it can make the screen a little busy, but hey, I'll take it. Speaking of POIs. I have found the pre-loaded POIs to be very inaccurate and frustrating to use. They have sent me on wild goose chases to businesses that were either notexistent or somewhere else. A big deal in a large RV is a frustrating annoyance on a motorcycle. Because of this, I stopped using Garmin's POIs a couple of years ago and now use other alternatives when searching for food, fuel, or anything else. Really? They could be better now. I don't know. I have been burned so many times that it will be a while before I try to use them again. I let the gps show me the nearest gas station for the first time since I owned it, against my better judgement. We went after it was shown to be close to us. I passed a gas station on the way that the gps didn't know about, and it took me about 5 blocks further up the street to a run down old building that was probably a gas station in a previous life. We were checking out an RV park for a future trip later that day, and I let the gps search for nearby RV parks on my phone. It didn't know that the RV park was established. The bottom line. If you need to find a place, don't use the POIs. You can enter the address into the gps by searching for it on your cell phone. The weather radar is connected to your phone through a wireless connection. I haven't had any showers that chase me around yet, but it all seems to work if you have a good wireless data signal. This feature is really cool. I have only used it for short trips, but if it's like any of my other current ones, they will find the address and you can be pretty confident they will get you there eventually, but will also sometimes choose strange routes. Always take a quick look at the proposed route, and always choose common sense over what a gps tells you. This thing is expensive. It's very expensive. It is the most expensive non-marine gps I have ever purchased. I would buy it again in a second. I still think it's great and would not want to be without it. As time goes on, I will probably update this review.
